Heavyweight Paul Gallen (12-1-1) is aiming to make Australian boxing history live on Main Event this Wednesday evening as he attempts to become the first cross-code athlete to hold the Australian and Australasian titles simultaneously. Gallen faces a tough challenge in 32-year-old southpaw Kris Terzievski (10-1-1, 8KO) as part of a card packed with up-and-coming talent that can be seen live via Main Event Pay Per View on Foxtel and Kayo.
“Winning this title is going to be very satisfying and a huge achievement for myself and my team,” Gallen said.
“I’ve been lucky enough to win premierships, win Origins, play for my country and to be able to do this, it’s not something set out to do, but to be able to achieve it and etch my name in the history books is going to be pretty special.”
Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Harry Garside (2-0) – who turned professional last December – will clash with Layton McFerran (5-1) only 35 days after being crowned Australian lightweight champion.
“Fighting in Newcastle under Paul Gallen is a massive, massive deal for me,” Garside said.
“Paul Gallen has done incredible things for boxing and he’s up against a tough opponent. I’m very grateful to him for what he’s done for us young fighters, to give us a platform and I’m sure he’ll have his hands raised with some belts around his waist at the end of the night.”
Nikita Tszyu, brother to world-ranked Tim Tszyu and youngest son of former world champion Kostya Tszyu, will take on Melbourne’s Mason Smith (5-0, 2 KO) in his second professional fight. It marks the 10th time the Tszyu-family name has featured at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, with no loss recorded.
Fox League’s NRL 360 will broadcast live from Newcastle, bringing all the ringside action from 5.30pm (earlier time slot). Guests include, Gallen, Terzievski, Garside along with Nikita and Tim Tszyu.
