Star Wars: The Force Awakens takes over $50m in Australia

• Star Wars: The Force Awakens takes $11m on second weekend as total passes $50m

The second weekend of what looks likely to be the second biggest movie ever at the Australian box office – Star Wars: The Force Awakens – sold tickets worth $11.80m. The number of screens showing the movie dropped from 941 to 832 which resulted in a second weekend screen average of $14,184.
The total to-date earn of the movie has climbed past $50m which sees it already taking a place in the biggest ever top 10 in Australia.

With another $8m in the bank, which seems likely across the next few weeks, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will secure a place as the second-biggest movie ever to be released in Australia.
However it will need some significant momentum to mount an attack on top spot which sees Avatar sitting on $115m.
Total box office for the top 20 movies on the weekend, Thursday to Sunday, was $22.85m.
The total take for the remainder of the 19 movies in the top 20 over the holiday weekend was $11m with new releases Daddy’s Home and The Good Dinosaur both taking over $2m each.
The top five was rounded out by two other new releases – Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip and Joy – which both did close to $1.5m.
