Iconic TV series Neighbours axed for a second time

Iconic Australian soap Neighbours has been cancelled – again – after production company Fremantle Australia failed to secure a new deal with Amazon, just two years after the streaming giant revived the show.

In a statement, both Fremantle Australia and Amazon confirmed they have advised Network 10 that production of the show will end in July this year, with the last episode airing in December 2025.

A Network 10 spokesperson thanked the cast, crew, all the production team and Fremantle for everything they had done to bring the perfect blend of soap and sunshine to audiences in Australia and around the world.

“It is a mighty achievement that the series will reach the 40-year milestone next month,” the network said in a statement. “The program will be missed by the fans and the people who have been part of this amazing journey. We wish them well.”

Amazon originally brought Neighbours back in a multi-year deal after its 2022 farewell episode featured star-studded cameos from Margot Robbie, Kylie Minogue, and Guy Pearce.

Following news of the show’s cancellation, a petition to save Neighbours gathered over 60,000 signatures. In November of that year, Amazon Freevee announced it would revive the series.

The show was then relaunched in 2023, but after the service was folded into Prime Video, its future became uncertain. Now, it appears the lifeline has run out.

Former Neighbours star Christie Hayes, who now hosts the Dan & Christie breakfast show on Hit 100.9, told Mediaweek the news had left her “really upset”.

“Neighbours has employed so many Australians that work hard. I implore everyone to write to Amazon, irrespective of your thoughts on the show.

“There are crew that are going to lose their jobs, there are cast members that are going to lose their jobs. This production employs a lot of people, and people that have been there for many years,” she said.

The actress went on to say that “the show might not be over yet”, a statement echoed by the show’s executive producer Jason Herbison.

In a statement confirming the news, Herbison said that “we value how much the fans love Neighbours and we believe there are more stories of the residents of Ramsay Street to tell in the future.”

The revived series made waves last year, earning its first-ever Emmy nominations for Best Daytime Drama and Best Guest Performance for Pearce.
