In a new partnership with Similarweb, Mediaweek is now able to give insights into the traffic going to Australia’s 20 biggest news websites.
The data differs from what has previously been shared in the market because this is total non-unique traffic data.
Similarweb data is used by some of the world’s biggest brands and the company has a team of 800 people with offices on six continents and is now publicly traded on the NYSE.
The data for October 2021 continues to show abc.net.au as the biggest Australian news publisher with over 100m total visits for the month.
News.com.au is not far behind just under the 100m visit mark.
Three Nine Entertainment Co properties are in the top 10 – 9News, The SMH and The Age – with 106m combined visits to the three digital properties. Another Nine property in the top 20 is The AFR on just under 12m visits for the month.
While News Corp Australia holds #2 spot this month, its next best are outside the top 10 – Perth Now, Herald Sun and The Australian. It is interesting that the digital-only Perth Now has substantially bigger traffic than the print and digital news brand The Daily Telegraph which falls just outside the top 20 this month.
Two independents in the top 20 chart – non-government and not part of big media or tech groups – are The Guardian at #6 and The New Daily at #18.
In the data for August 2021, The Canberra Times squeezed into the top 20 with 5.3m visits. However for October it has dropped off the Similarweb top 20 ranking with less than 5m visits.
