Neighbours turns 40: The soap opera that built careers and shaped Australian TV

Jason Herbison: ‘We love anniversaries at Neighbours – and the 40th is our biggest yet’.

Neighbours, the iconic Australian soap opera that has captivated audiences for four decades, marks its 40th anniversary today. Since its 1985 debut, the fictional suburb of Erinsborough and its Ramsay Street residents have not only entertained millions but also played a pivotal role in shaping Australian television and global talent.

A launchpad for Aussie stars

Beyond its compelling storytelling, Neighbours has been a launchpad for some of Australia’s biggest names. From Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan to Guy Pearce, Natalie Imbruglia, Margot Robbie, and the Hemsworth brothers, the series has consistently discovered and nurtured talent, propelling them to international success.

The show has also provided a training ground for behind-the-scenes creatives, including writers and directors, cementing its influence across the entertainment industry.

A milestone moment

As the show celebrates this landmark anniversary, executive producer Jason Herbison reflects on the significance of the occasion.

“We love anniversaries at Neighbours – and the 40th is our biggest yet, and that’s cause for celebration. The 40th anniversary is a huge week that tips a hat to all the big soapie twists and turns our viewers have come to love. It’s fresh and nostalgic at the same time. The week’s events also set us up with great storylines for the coming months,” he said.

Bittersweet goodbye

The momentous occasion comes just weeks after it was axed for a second time, following Fremantle Australia failure to secure a new deal with Amazon, just two years after the streaming giant revived the show.

In a statement at the time, both Fremantle Australia and Amazon confirmed they have advised Network 10 that production of the show will end in July this year, with the last episode airing in December 2025.

A Network 10 spokesperson thanked the cast, crew, all the production team and Fremantle for everything they had done to bring the perfect blend of soap and sunshine to audiences in Australia and around the world.

Neighbours airs Monday to Thursday at 4:00pm on 10 and 10 Play and 6:30pm on 10 Peach.
