The driver of the growth engine within the Fairfax Media group has copped a fair bit of flack this week and this year, but he hit back late in 2016 at his critics and REA Group. Calling REA copycats, Catalano said: “It must be demoralising for the staff at REA to be constantly told they are #1, but have to behave every day like they are #2.” Although Domain trails REA, Catalano noted the gap continues to close after Domain reached a record audience of 4.69m Australians in October. Despite speculation that Domain could be floated or sold, or even become the new Fairfax brand, Catalano told Mediaweek that the business works well within Fairfax with big benefits for both businesses and that print remains an important marketing tool for people selling a property.
