Former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian is set to join Optus, beginning in her new role as managing director, enterprise, business, and institutional from February 28th.
Berejiklian resigned as premier in October last year off the back of an Independent Commission Against Corruption investigation into her potential breaches of public trust during her relationship with disgraced former MP Daryl Maguire. ICAC has not yet released its findings in a final report. The corruption watchdog’s findings are due to be handed down later in February.
She denies the allegations.
Since stepping down as NSW premier, rumours have circulated about whether or not Berejiklian would be running for the federal seat of Warringah – previously heald by Tony Abbott. Encouragement for her to run came from Scott Morrison himself, however, she ruled out a return to politics in December.
Optus CEO Kelly Bayer Rosmarin officially announced Berejiklian’s appointment on Friday.
“Gladys is a proven leader who demonstrated her renowned strength, leadership, discipline, and composure in successfully guiding Australia’s largest state through one of the biggest challenges in its history while earning the support and gratitude of the community for her tireless contribution,” Bayer Rosmarin said.
“She also builds and fosters loyal and dedicated teams who really go above and beyond for her.
“I believe she will be a game-changer for Optus. In bringing our business-focused teams together under this newly created role I truly believe that our collective energies can deliver superior customer outcomes in market segments that continue to be dominated by the incumbent.”
Speaking about her new role, Berejiklian said in a statement: “I am excited and proud to join an organisation that impacts the lives of millions of Australians every day and prides itself in providing outstanding customer service.
“I look forward to working with Kelly and the Executive Team of Optus who are providing inspiring and innovative leadership in the telco sector.”
