In its second week of release, Fast & Furious 9 is still #1 at the Australian box office with fuel to burn despite a 58% drop off following a Covid-19 affected weekend.
The 10th entry in The Fast and the Furious franchise managed to hold off two new releases in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and In the Heights which were both released following advanced screenings.
The two films to drop out of the top five this week were A Quiet Place II which has made $12.63m over the last five weeks, and Spirit Untamed which has made $2.80m over three weeks.
Overall the Australian box office was down 35% and made $9.19m despite the Covid-19 outbreak affecting the number of people able to attend theatres.
#1 Fast & Furious 9 $3,748,535
The latest instalment in The Fast and the Furious franchise might have had a sizeable drop off from last week but has still posted a strong revenue total of over $3m despite the pandemic. The total of the film now sits at $14.81m after averaging $6,853 on 547 screens this weekend.
#2 The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard $1,550,186
Coming off an advanced screening, the sequel to the Hitman’s Bodyguard has now had its full weekend release, averaging $4,145 on 374 screens. The film sees Salma Hayek join Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson in the comedy heavy action film. The total for the film now sits at $4.39m.
#3 In the Heights $755,744
While most people know Hamilton, the second musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda, his first work In the Heights is now getting mainstream attention in the form of a film. Following pre-release screening last week the film averaged $2,494 on 303 screens with the total of the film now $1.68m.
#4 The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It $690,430
The third instalment in the Conjuring franchise and the eighth film in The Conjuring Universe has made $9.21m over the last four weeks and had an average of $2,784 on 258 screens this weekend.
#5 Cruella $583,496
Cruella has secured a fifth week in the top five after averaging $1,882 on 310 screens. The films total now sits at $7.46m.
