The Brisbane Racing Club Stradbroke Day is set to start at 12:00 pm Saturday on Channel Seven (Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane) and 7TWO (Adelaide at 11:30 am and Perth at 10:00 am).
Bruce McAvaney will lead Seven’s exclusive coverage of the Stradbroke Day at Eagle Farm where he will also be crossing all day to meetings at Royal Randwick and Sandown.
The Stradbroke Day for 2023 has had its prizemoney doubled to $3 million for the Group 1 handicap and total value across the nine-race card of nearly $6.6 million.
Last year, Alligator Blood and Private Eye came away to run 1-2 before going on to great success in the spring.
The Stradbroke Day is also home to the running of the Group 2 $1.2 million SKY Racing Q22, Group 2 $400,000 XXXX Brisbane Cup and the Group 1 $1 million Ladbrokes J.J. Atkins, a race where a future superstar of the turf is often born.
Six of the past eight Stradbroke winners have gone on to further Group 1 success, with Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-Trained Alligator Blood being consistently among Australia’s best this season.
The Stradbroke Day first went to $1 million in 1996 when Danasinga claimed the prize for the Lee Freedman stable. Then, in 2015 Srikandi took out the first – and only – running of the $2 million Stradbroke.
While the race dropped back to $1.5 million the following year and remained at that mark ever since, 2023 will be the first ever year where the day will see a $3 million Stradbroke. It will be the richest race ever run in Queensland.
While the race continues to produce notable winners, Rough Habit remains the iconic dual winner of the race, in the 1992 success under Jim Cassidy which still is on Australian racing’s annual highlights reel.
