This week saw the release of the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the newest Marvel show on Disney+. Based on the Marvel Comics characters Sam Wilson (AKA Falcon) and Bucky Barnes (AKA Winter Soldier) team up six months after being handed the mantle of Captain America at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
The series has started strong despite only one episode being available so far, entering the charts at number eight on the top ten Digital Originals in Australia, and making number three on the Digital Originals chart for New Zealand.
There will be one episode released per week, with the sixth and final episode airing on April 23rd. While this is fewer episodes than WandaVision, the expected episode runtime is longer, with each episode around 40 to 50 minutes.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the second Marvel show to be released on Disney+ for the year, with both Loki and Ms. Marvel coming up later in 2021.
WandaVision and The Mandalorian – both now in extra time as their seasons have wrapped up – remain steady in the first and second positions across both Digital Original charts. WandaVision continues to sit at number one across all four charts.
Also entering the top ten overall shows is Married At First Sight Australia, coming in ninth overall in Australia and tenth in New Zealand. The show has been dominating the Australian free to air rankings and has almost singlehandedly pushed Channel Nine to win its nights. With the exception of Oprah’s interview with Meghan and Harry, Married At First Sight has been the number one entertainment program each time it has aired.
It is the second international show to make New Zealand’s top ten, with the US version of The Voice coming in at number nine overall.
