The annual Triple J Hottest 100 countdown doesn’t kick off until tomorrow, but as an introduction, the station has spent Friday playing out the songs that came in at 200-101.
Whilst big names like Gang Of Youths, The Weeknd, and Kendrick Lamar have all made early appearances, one name that was less expected was The Chaser.
Coming in at #136 on the countdown, the incredibly explicit Coal Makes Me Cum is Frankensteined out of Scott Morrison soundbites from last year’s pre-election leaders debate. The track has seen The Chaser pull individual clips to make Morrison sing lines such as “F*ck you and your family and the essential services you rely on / Right now, as a criminal, the thing I love is corruption / F*ck you, other c*nts facing floods and bushfires / When disaster strikes I’m ready to go on vacation in Hawaii.”
In a pre-recorded intro played ahead of the song, Triple J made it very clear that the song was parody, Morrison had never said these things, and that the song did not reflect the views of Triple J.
The track beat out predicted big hitters in the countdown such as Sirens by Flume (at #148) and 2am by Foals (#153). What potentially makes this a bigger victory for the Chaser team is that the track was not a pre-listed option that people could vote for – it needed to be manually added.
With the full countdown beginning at 12pm AEDT on January 28, Triple J has already dropped some statistics about this year’s results.
This year at least two Hottest 100 records are set to be broken. The list will see 57 songs from Australian Artists this year and 23 acts making their debut.
The station has also announced that F-bombs will be dropped 131 times across the countdown, which is up nearly 30% from last year’s countdown – and that doesn’t include the several dropped in Coal Makes Me Cum.
