David Swan: “It’s been more difficult than ever to whittle down the nation’s top innovators to a mere 100 people”

The Australian has published its third annual edition of The List: 100 Innovators 2023

The List: 100 Innovators celebrates and highlights Australia’s best next-generation leaders. It covers categories such as energy, software, technology, AI, finance, manufacturing, hardware and infrastructure, cyber security, medicine and healthcare, education, agriculture, environment, food, retail and e-commerce, space, travel and art and design.

As a nation of early adopters, Australian entrepreneurs have game-changing ideas as diverse as AI-based drug-making, virtual soccer leagues, orbital launch vehicles and bionic voice boxes, as they share a common goal of propelling the nation into the future and inspiring coming generations. Amid tough economic times, the 100 buoyant innovators featured this year are leading the way forward.

The Australian’s The List: 100 Innovators 2023 is edited by Technology Editor David Swan and curated by a world-class advisory panel assembled by The Australian. The panel includes Didier Elzinga, Founder, Culture AMP; Dom Price, Atlassian Work Futurist and Keynote Speaker; Edwina McCann, Editorial Director and Publisher, News Prestige; Jane MacMaster, Chief Engineer, Engineers Australia; Julie Bishop, Chancellor, Australian National University; Kate Pounder, CEO, Tech Council of Australia; Roy Green, Emeritus Professor, University of Technology Sydney; Sally-Ann Williams, Chief Executive Officer, Cicada Innovations; Amanda Price, Head of High Growth Ventures, KPMG; and Steve Vallas, Managing Director, Blockchain APAC.

Swan said: “Now in its third edition, it’s been more difficult than ever to whittle down the nation’s top innovators to a mere 100 people. I owe a great deal to our advisory panel who helped to shape the list and provide invaluable insights into who must be on it.

“The list is by no means definitive – it’s not supposed to be – and besides, there are far more than 100 innovators across the country. But it is a snapshot of some of the most wild, provocative, ambitious things happening right now across our labs, offices and classrooms, and the people bold enough to try them.”

The cover story features Tesla chair and Blackbird operating partner Robyn Denholm, who sits down for a rare interview about the innovative DNA behind Tesla.

Also in the issue is Australia II skipper John Bertrand, who speaks about his team’s famous 1983 America’s Cup victory and the parallels he draws from that time to thriving as an entrepreneur today; and Professor Nick Opie, one of the brains behind clinical trials that are helping paralysed people to control computers with their minds.

The issue is supported by key advertisers including KPMG Australia, Audi, TechnologyOne, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Rolex, Paspaley, Omega and Viking.

The List: 100 Innovators 2023 magazine is available online exclusively to subscribers at theaustralian.com.au and as a glossy magazine inserted into The Australian newspaper today, Friday September 15.
