Shinnecock

Yazmin Rodriguez made a rookie mistake when reporting on a PGA event happening at Shinnecock Hills in Pittsburgh.

She hadn't confirmed the pronunciation of the name of the location she was talking about - with delightful consequences for viewers.

“It’s already been a year since Oakmont Country Club hosted the 125th U.S. Open; it will be back here in Western PA in 2033,” Rodriguez said during a Sunday morning news report this week.

“This summer, Long Island, New York is on the spotlight with Shiny Cocks Hills hosting the 126th U.S. Open.”

A journalist from the area cut Rodriguez some slack: "Long Island towns are notoriously difficult to pronounce, which is why it’s a common bit for local teams to challenge rookies or newly acquired players by having them read towns such as Hauppauge, Massapequa, Patchogue, and Nissequogue.

'And in Rodriguez’s defense, she was pretty close in her attempt at pronouncing Shinnecock. Unfortunately for Rodriguez, changing 'shin-uh' to 'shiny' made this a notable mistake."

Nevertheless, cheeky viewers wanted to know if the mispronunciation was a Freudian slip, or simple confusion?

Naturally, jokes abounded on posts of the moment.

"One of the longest and hardest courses on Tour."

"Stay strong Shiny cock Hills."

"Wonder what’s on her mind."

"That’s exactly what my voice text would have written down then noticed after I sent a text off."

Now that one's less in the gutter and more relatable.
