Sunrise showbiz reporter Nelson Aspen has announced his departure from the breakfast show, on Friday.
The New York-based correspondent surprised viewers with the news following his regular segment on the top-rating program.
Aspen said: “After 19 and a half years with Sunrise, which Nat and I can identify with how long that it is, I’m giving you my two-week notice. I don’t want it to be too much of a surprise”
“I’m going to go finish up my new book which will be coming out in September,” he shared as he presented a mock-up of the cover to his book: “Your home is your castle: Live like an A-lister in a post-pandemic world.”
The entertainment reporter continued: “I’m going to show you either how to make your new home or bloom where you are already planted.”
Aspen explained that after finishing the book, he will set off on a book tour and a concert Q and A show which will include Australian cities, much like his previous events at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and Sydney Opera House.
“In the meantime you have me here for two more weeks, always on social media, and then we will have a look back and a farewell on the 15th (of July). All good stuff,” he said.
Natalie Barr held off from sharing her final farewell to her long-time colleague, and instead said: “Nelson, it has been a wonderful ride. We’re going to miss you but this is not goodbye because you got two more weeks to say that.”
Aspen retweeted a video of his departure announcement on Twitter and wrote: “A bittersweet morning, indeed. Love you, Australia!”
Aspen has been part of Sunrise for close to two decades, bringing the latest in entertainment and pop culture to viewers every morning.
The showbiz reporter has reported from red carpet events, award shows and interviewed some of Hollywood’s hottest names.
Aspen’s final day on Sunrise will be on Friday, July 15.
