SBS has announced that four-time Oscar winner, Catherine Martin, joins as Australia’s spokesperson for the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest.
The Eurovision Song Contest voting procedure is legendary, but even more legendary is the coveted role of the official spokesperson and Martin will deliver the scores on behalf of Australia this year.
Martin said: “I am so excited to be the spokesperson for Australia at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
“Since my first memories of ABBA exploding onto the stage and becoming the worldwide phenomenon they are, I have been obsessed, not only with the extraordinary celebration of music and songwriting but also with the inspiration, staging, costuming, and lighting.
“Eurovision celebrates not only musical excellence but the presentation of music, in visually extraordinary ways,” she added.
Martin is a four-time Oscar winning production designer, costume designer and producer. She has collaborated with her husband and creative partner Baz Luhrmann on the distinctive look of all their productions for over 30 years, establishing them as two of the world’s most innovative creators of film, theatre and entertainment.
In 1992, the couple began designing for film and partnered with Luhrmann on his stunning film debut, Strictly Ballroom. Her work garnered two BAFTA awards for Production Design and Costume Design, and an AFI award for Production Design.
Martin’s followed this success in 1996 with Luhrmann’s iconic film version of William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Art Direction and won another BAFTA for Production Design.
The couple’s acclaimed work also include Moulin Rouge, Australia starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, The Great Gatsby, The Get Down and Elvis.
Martin also has her own homewares brand, Catherine Martin Home, collaborating with Designer Rugs and Mokum Textiles on fabrics and wallpaper. Her work features prominently in the Faena Hotel, Miami Beach, for which she and Luhrmann provided the overall interior design vision.
Martin divides her time between New York and the Gold Coast with Luhrmann and their two children.
