WPP’s Secrets and Lies report explores changing consumer behaviour in Australia

WPP in Australia and New Zealand has published its report, Secrets and Lies: Chapter six: ‘Fact, Fiction and What’s New in 22?’

The report takes a deep dive into consumer behaviour in Australia, revisiting key themes from the earlier five reports and showing how the perceptions and priorities of 2,000 Australians have shifted over the past four years.

The cultural insights coupled with data and expert knowledge gives businesses guidance to inform strategy and drive growth for big brands.

Rose Herceg, president Australia and New Zealand, WPP, said: “The world is finding a new groove after a global shutdown. Here in Australia, a federal election has brought a change of government and a wave of mostly female independent candidates have been voted into parliament.

“The climate conversation has changed, but cost of living pressures have dented consumer confidence. Set against this backdrop, the time was right to see how we have progressed as a nation. We have covered a wide range of topics in the first five chapters of Secrets and Lies, from individual and national identity to age, technology and language.”

England’s Euros triumph draws record TV audience of 17m

A peak TV audience of more than 17 million tuned in to watch England’s historic win over Germany in the Euro 2022 final, making it the most-watched women’s football game in UK television history and the most-watched TV event of the year, reports The Guardian’s Mark Sweney.

The Lionesses’ dramatic 2-1 victory ended England’s 56-year wait for a major football trophy and 80% of all TV viewers were watching as the extra-time winner went in at a sold-out Wembley on Sunday night.

The peak audience of 17.4 million viewers makes the BBC One broadcast the biggest TV event of the year so far and there was an average audience of 11 million across the entire Match of the Day programme from 4.50pm to 9.30pm.

Tim Davie, the BBC director general, said: “We are incredibly proud to have championed women’s football and are thrilled we were able to bring such a special sporting moment to the public.

“This was the most-watched women’s football game on UK television of all time and the most-watched programme in 2022 so far – and deservedly so.”

Amazon wants its NFL coverage to come in different flavors

Amazon.com is looking to draw in new audiences to its “Thursday Night Football” coverage by having a group of guys known for their comedy routines and trick shots call some of its games, reports The Wall Street Journal’s Lillian Rizzo.

This coming season will mark the first time Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service has exclusive rights to the National Football League’s Thursday matchups. The company hired acclaimed announcer Al Michaels to host its main broadcast, but is also planning to offer different, simultaneous feeds in an effort to reach Prime Video viewers who might not be typical NFL fans.

One of these alternate streaming feeds will be hosted by Dude Perfect, a sports-comedy team known for performing trick shots and challenges—like pitching a ball through the open window of a moving car or having professional-athlete guests such as former quarterback Drew Brees perform similar types of stunts.
