Ray Hadley, a veteran of Australian radio, announced his retirement to 2GB listeners on Thursday.
His retirement concludes a career that began back in 1981 when he unexpectedly impressed a 2UE news director while working as a cab driver.
Since then, Hadley has become one of the most recognised voices in the nation, particularly through his top-rated show on 2GB. He has consistently dominated his time slot in Sydney, with his program syndicated across more than 30 stations nationwide, including Brisbane’s 4BC, Canberra’s 2CC, and several regional stations throughout NSW, Queensland, and Victoria. His reach and influence have cemented him as a pivotal figure in talk radio.
Hadley reflected on his career, which has spanned memorable milestones and changes in the industry. After catching the attention of 2UE’s Mark Collier in a chance encounter, Hadley joined the station full-time in 1983. He remained at 2UE for nearly two decades before moving to 2GB in 2001 to cover weekend rugby league. By mid-2002, he was hosting the morning show — a role he held to great acclaim.
He told listeners that December 13 will be his last day broadcasting.
Hadley said: “My own four children made many sacrifices for me over the years, allowing me to realise my ambitions, and I want to spend more time with them and my seven grandchildren. Sophie has been the most supporting, calming, loving and amazing wife – and she deserves a break too!”
“I’ve had the ride of my life at 2GB for more than 23 years, firstly under the ownership of John Singleton and more recently with Nine Entertainment and Nine Radio. I leave the network with me owing 2GB everything for my success and longevity. I wish all my colleagues continued success.”
A new host for the 2GB Morning Program will be announced in due course.
Luke Davis, content manager, 2GB Sydney, said: “Ray Hadley’s contribution to Australian radio and millions of listeners over the years can be marked by volume, impact and tenure. I know Ray is looking forward to spending more time with Sophie, his four children, his seven cherished grandchildren and perhaps a few more rounds of golf!”
Nine Radio’s managing director, Tom Malone said: “We’ll likely never see another broadcaster of Ray’s versatility, longevity and ratings success. While the 2GB listeners will miss that familiar jingle and voice at 9am every day, I’m sure they wish Ray all the best in retirement with Sophie and the family.”
