LiSTNR’s Empowering Leaders with Luke Darcy will explore the themes around leadership, leadership styles and how leaders across different industries have masterminded impactful change within their careers.
Mediaweek‘s Trent Thomas caught up with Darcy to talk about his foray into podcasting and what he has learned about leadership.
Darcy said the idea for the podcast was inspired by the work he is doing within his business, Aleda, with childhood friend, Matt Wadewitz. Aleda has been created to help empower leaders with a focus on collaboration, shifting leadership from the 20th-century style to a more modern approach of inclusion.
Darcy said: “I had been thinking about this space for a long period of time. And working in a leadership space through our business Aleda and seeing the changing way in which new leaders are operating. Seeing a real shift in leadership into a 21st-century style with lots of collaboration and working with so many iconic leaders, it felt like there were some great stories that we’re hearing and sharing them felt like a positive thing to do.”
When asked why leadership was such an appealing option for Darcy to talk about the former Western Bulldogs player said that it is something that affects everyone.
“For all of us, leadership is something that is in our lives whether we like it or not. You don’t have to be a CEO or have a title, to be able to positively impact those in the environment around you.
“We have done a lot of work with schools and teachers and sporting leaders, leaders in industry and the arts as well. You are just sharing those great ways that people are positively impacting other people and it feels like a really worthwhile thing to do.”
The podcast sees Darcy chat with some of the country’s most prominent leaders, including Australian cricket coach Justin Langer, comedian Andy Lee, Lord Mayor of Melbourne Sally Capp, former AFL footballer and Triangl swimwear co-founder Craig Ellis, and senior vice president and managing director for The Walt Disney Company and president of the Western Bulldogs Football Club Kylie Watson Wheeler.
“I admire Justin Langer’s philosophy and what he has tried to do to create a great culture in the Australian cricket team and Kylie Watson Wheeler on the culture of Disney is fascinating. In a few weeks time we have Brian Hartzer who was the CEO for Westpac bank when they went through an incredibly challenging time, but I love the responsibility he takes for all his actions and did throughout that time as well.
“An old friend of mine created one of the leading swimwear brands in the world called Triangl. Craig Ellis’ business story is extraordinary, and the way he leads his team with many people around the world it is just fascinating to sit down and talk to him.
“I feel like there’s a wealth of great stories to tell so I’m going to be doing it for a while.”
Despite a long history of leadership, Darcy said that he continued to learn more about the topic through making this podcast.
“The main takeaway for me was that I kept writing notes down for myself and thinking I can do this myself and some of the daily habits and routines that great leaders use are fascinating. The way they think about engaging people in the team, the way I constantly self reflect and self improve is just inspiring.
“I’ve enjoyed recording these as much as anything I’ve ever done in media. And I think that’s probably a good place to start if you’re interested yourself, hopefully, other people will be as well.”
Since Darcy finishing up on Triple M’s Hot Breakfast, he said that he has been gravitating towards longer-form content in his personal life which has now come out in his professional work.
“The opportunity to not have time as an issue. In radio, you’re really constantly trying to have these sound bites of five or six minutes that you are really constrained with and that was always a challenge. You get a great guest on the radio and have a whole heap of things that you wanted to discuss with them, but you never really had the chance to.”
Empowering Leaders with Luke Darcy is produced by LiSTNR’s Mat Dwyer, the first three episodes featuring Matt Wadewitz, Justin Langer, and Kylie Watson Wheeler are available now.

Schwartz Media investigates music industry misogyny
From the creators of 7am, Australia’s most listened to daily news podcast, comes the new series
series Everybody Knows.
In this five-part series journalist and host of 7am Ruby Jones explores the rise and fall of the Me Too movement in Australia and investigates serious allegations of harassment, abuse and assault in the Australian music industry.
“This series is an investigation into the underbelly of the Australian music industry, the harassment, abuse and misogyny that’s been allowed to flourish there for years, but my investigation doesn’t stop there,” said Jones.
“I want to know why four years on from Me Too, so little has changed for women in Australia, how the law, journalistic failures and a culture of ‘boys will be boys’ has combined to make speaking about abuse so impossible. How is it that everybody knows about the crimes being committed and yet nothing changes?”
Through in-depth interviews with figures central to the Me Too movement – including human rights lawyer Jen Robinson, who acted for Amber Heard and Rose McGowan; Bruce McClintock, the barrister who represented Geoffrey Rush; journalists such as Kate McClymont, who broke Australia’s first Me Too stories and survivors – Jones will uncover how a culture of secrecy, where men protect men, works in lockstep with the media and archaic laws to protect abusers.
Everybody Knows will be distributed by Acast! making it available across all podcast apps and players such as Apple Podcasts and Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. The trailer is out now and the first episode will be available from September 1.
