MTV has announced the 2022 MTV Movie and TV Awards will return for a two-day celebration, honouring the biggest and best in movies and television.
The event will be held in Los Angeles at the Barker Hangar from Monday, June 6 for Australian viewers and will air on MTV across the globe, in over 180 countries.
Following the award show is the second annual Movie and TV Awards: Unscripted, a celebration of reality television, which will also be broadcasted on MTV on June 7 in Australia.
The first MTV Movie Awards was held in 1992. Since then, they have been traditionally held at the start of the summer blockbuster season for the film industry.
The nominees are decided by producers and executives at MTV. The winners are then decided by the public.
The popular show has featured awards like best movie, best performance in a movie, best comedic performance and best kiss, which has been famously won by the likes to Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling for The Notebook, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart for Twilight, and Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire for Spiderman.
In more recent times, new award categories have been introduced such as best reality series, best music documentary and best on-screen team.
Winners of these awards are presented with the prestigious Golden Popcorn statue made by New-York-Firm society awards.
Executive producers of both events are MTV’s Bruce Gilmer, Wendy Plaut, and Vanessa Whitewolf, as well as Jesse Ignjatovic and Barb Bialkowski from Den of Thieves.
Jackie Barba and Alicia Portugal are Executives in Charge of Production and Lisa Lauricella serves as the Music Talent Executive for both events.
In recent years, the event has featured hosts like Will Smith, Lisa Kudrow and Ben Stiller.
The ‘generation award’, a lifetime achievement award. Recipients of this award include Tom Cruise, Jim Carey and Mike Myers.
The award show’s hosts, honourees, presenters and performances will be announced at a later date.
