Breakfast managed to avoid the downward dip across the station as Ross and Russ saw breakfast ratings grow 1.7 to 19.3%. The biggest dip in ratings came in afternoon where share slipped from 12.0% to 9.4%. Evenings had the smallest dip with share down just 0.1 for the combined share of evenings with Luke Grant (in for Money News host Brooke Corte) and Denis Walter. Cume continued to hold above 800,000.

Christian O’Connell continues to power Melbourne’s leading FM station as the ARN band extends its rating-winning streak as #1 FM and #1 FM breakfast. Gold had its first-ever year with share over 10% in every survey in 2021 and it’s on track to do it again in 2022. Daytime share continues to peak in afternoon with a marketing-leading slice of 14.8% of the market tuning in this time. Gold also remains overall drive champ with 10.2%. Gold remains a clear leader 40-54 and now is close to overtaking 3AW 55-64.
smoothfm 91.5 9.4% (9.3%)
Cume 1,153,000 (+46,000)
2021 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 8.9% (6.8%)
Best Breakfast 7.2% (4.4%)
After a sluggish start to 2022, smoothfm has just posted its fourth consecutive 10+ share above 9%, something its last achieved at the start of 2019. The result comes off the back of slights dips in share at breakfast (down 0.2 to 7.6%) and morning (down 0.9 to 9.9%). Afternoon was steady on 10.7, but both drive (up 1.5 to 9.6%) and evening (up 1.2 to 9.3%) bucked the slight morning slump. The station is most competitive 40-54 and 55-64, but it trails Gold significantly in both. smoothfm remains the champ 65+ for a demo that has plenty of spending power. (Or so a friend told me!)
101.1 Fox FM 9.3% (9.1%)
Cume 1,360,000 (+35,000)
2021 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 7.8% (5.5%)
Best breakfast 7.9% (4.7%)
Fox continues to lead the market in cume which is a strong result with five FM stations all posting cume audiences over 1m. The Fox cume remains #1 1.35m. All dayparts continue to contribute, led by breakfast with Fifi, Fev and Nick on 9.3%. It’s the third time over a 9.0% share for Fox in breakfast, something it hasn’t done in a calendar year since 2019. (In 2019 and 2018 it busted above 10% three times.) The Fox audience peaks in afternoon with 11.1% this survey. Fox has grabbed top spot 18-24 (overtaking KIIS) and 25-39 (overtaking Triple M).
Nova 100 7.9% (8.0%)
Cume 1,242,000 (+11,000)
2021 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 7.8% (6.2%)
Best breakfast 8.0% (6.1%)
Nova breakfast share with Chrissie, Sam and Browny has hovered over 9% for a second consecutive survey, despite a dip this book, a performance Nova hasn’t matched since the days of Hughesy and Kate. The station’s challenge remains carrying the breakfast audience through to the rest of the day. The audience builds back by drive though where Kate, Tim and Joel hover close to 10% yet trail both Fox and market leader Gold. Smallsy saw his evening number up 0.5 to 8.2%. Nova 100 doesn’t lead any demos (outside 10-17), but is competitive 18-25, 25-39 and 40-54.\
105.1 Triple M 7.3% (5.8%)
Cume 886,000 (+124,000)
2021 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 5.3% (4.0%)
Best breakfast 6.2% (3.6%)
The station has posted its best share since a 7.6% in Survey 1, 2019. The improving Marty Sheargold show is on the up too. Albeit off a lower base. However a breakfast share of 6.3% is a 1.0 lift and the best since the last survey of 2020 when The Hot Beakfast said goodbye. Cume shares were up 40-54 and 55-64 where Triple M is suddenly a better consideration for ad buyers.
KIIS 101.1 FM 6.7% (7.6%)
Cume 1,235,000 (+47,000)
2021 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 6.4% (4.5%)
Best Breakfast 7.4% (4.6%)
The turnaround story of the year in the Melbourne market has to be KIIS FM (so far). The combo of Jase and Lauren in breakfast continues to pay dividends. While breakfast share was down a little (8.1% to 7.8%), it’s still the second-best share in a decade or more. Listening across the rest of the day dipped a little too this survey where Byron Cooke and Will and Woody carry the KIIS flag. KIIS lost leadership of 18-24 and 25-39 to Fox this survey. Cume was the best the station has had in memory, pushing higher above 1.2m, and is now just 7,000 behind Nova.
SEN 2.9% (3.0%)
Cume 401,000 (+19,000)
2021 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 3.7% (2.2%)
Best Breakfast 3.8% (2.3%)
After a hiccup in Survey 1, 2022, the Melbourne flagship SEN station has steadied close to 3.0%. Breakfast with Garry and Tim (on most days) posted a year high of 3.4%. Also boasting an improved performance is Gerard Whateley with share up 0.4 to 3.7%.
Magic 1278 1.2% (1.0%)
Cume 137,000 (+5,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 1.7% (1.0%)
Best Breakfast 0.8% (0.3%)
Solid survey performance with share up across the board. Highlights were breakfast edging up to 0.6 (it was lower five times last year) and afternoon, evening and weekends growing by 0.3 in each slot. Share is highest in the later with 1.6%.
3MP 1377 1.0% (1.2%)
2021 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 1.2% (0.6%)
Best Breakfast 0.9% (0.4%)
Cume 116,000 (+5,000)
Of the music minnows in the Melbourne market, 3MP narrowly trails Magic. It has a better breakfast share tough (0.7% v 0.6%). Although the 3MP breakfast share is down from 1.1% last survey.\
RSN 927 0.6% (0.6%)
2021 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 0.6% (0.3%)
Best Breakfast 1.0% (0.2%)
