Meeting of the Minds brings together two different points of view from an industry rookie and an experienced expert.
The Mediaweek series aims to showcase their diverse perspectives, thoughts and opinions.
This week’s Meeting of the Minds sees Kelly Burnham and Hayden Edwards from independent media agency Atomic 212° reveal their leadership heroes, current streaming binge and career goals.
Kelly Burnham, group account director, Atomic 212°
Best career advice – Don’t promise what you can’t deliver.
My favourite podcast/read – “Do you f**king mind?” podcast.
Current streaming binge – “The Real Housewives” (all of them).
Leadership hero – Not a hero but I resonate with Margot Faraci and Ann Sherry’s leadership styles.
I wish someone had told me – If it won’t matter in five years, don’t spend more than five minutes worrying about it.
Guilty content pleasure – I love the “Day in the life” on TikTok.
Best training course/session – Mark Squiz Squirrell runs great courses.
Your mentor – Louise Romeo.
Hot medium or show – No recommendations.
Favourite media event – BAA Christmas Lunch.
Wish I’d done that – Worked overseas earlier in my career.
Career goal for the remainder of the year – We worry about tomorrow like it’s promised.
Hayden Edwards, Planning & Trading Assistant, Atomic 212°
Best career advice – Always look to make yourself indispensable.
My favourite podcast/read – Podcast wise, I really enjoyed “Everyone Hates Marketers” by Louis Grenier and “Work Life” with Adam Grant. Book wise, my favourite read so far was the “Wheel of Time” series.
Current streaming binge – I’m a big sci fi fan, so I just finished “Foundation” and “The Expanse”.
Leadership hero – Kevin Rudd. He led Australia through the global financial crisis and as a result, we were the only major developed country to come through the recession unscathed. Aside from that, he is a very intelligent man.
I wish someone had told me – NEVER rely on friendships or handshake agreements in business. Get everything in writing.
Guilty content pleasure – “Bluey”. I watch it with my two-year-old, but I’ve definitely kept watching after she’s walked away.
Best training course/session – Social Media Content: Curation and Creation at USC with Karen Sutherland. It honestly pushed me so far out of my comfort zone (I worked with a boudoir client), and it hammered home the foundations of what marketing is all about for me.
Your mentor – My old boss, Casey Benson. He is a Domino’s Pizza franchisee and he taught me so much not only about leadership, but just being a good person in general.
Hot medium or show – YouTube. I’m someone who needs new content all the time, and YouTube is the only channel that can keep up.
Favourite media event – Honestly, the site tour we did with QMS in Brisbane earlier this year. They did such a good job, and it was just a really good intro to broader media. Shout out Emma and Jimmy!
Wish I’d done that – I wish I’d chosen university over work. I was making bank compared to all my friends out of high school, but a few years later when they all started graduating, I realised I needed my degree to keep up with them.
Career goal for the remainder of the year – It remains the same as I’ve had since the beginning: I’m gunning hard for that exec role.
