2015 Highlight
The Rugby League grand final – without a doubt. It ticked every “fairy tale” box possible. The game was sensational and covering the build-up and aftermath was incredibly enjoyable. JT stole the show…and then some. It was also my first year as co-host of the Footy Show, so to really feel part of one of the best seasons of League in a long time was rewarding.
2015 Lowlight
Red Cadeaux passing away. Such a beautiful horse and a real sentimental favourite over the past few Melbourne Cups – I love the racing and the carnival – but there is a dark side to it and we saw that this year.
Story of the year
Michelle Payne winning the Melbourne Cup – just a brilliant moment in history and a brilliantly deserving woman who owned the moment in the best possible way. No airs or graces – just unpolished and real – and that’s what Aussies love! Michelle, Stevie and Darren – sensational – and Prince of Penzance did well too!
Most notable trend
I’ve noticed a trend in athlete attitudes changing towards the media and journalists. It went through a pretty bad patch for a few years – but this season across a lot of codes I’ve noticed a shift. A willingness to share more – let’s hope it continues.
What are you excited about for 2016?
I’m excited about the Rookie – Nine’s new reality show to find the next big NRL superstar. I am hosting the program – Freddy, MG and Adrian Lamb are coaching – and the young men vying for the contract at stake are so impressive – and even more entertaining. I hope it’s well received! Also hoping for another fulfilling year on Nine News, Today Show, The Footy Show, The Sunday Footy Show and many more exciting adventures!
