LiSTNR and the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) have launched a podcast series to help people understand why referendums are held and how to participate, as Australians prepare to head to the polls on 14 October.
It’s been over 20 years since Australia held a referendum, which means around 6.4 million people haven’t voted in one before. The 10-episode Your Answer Matters – Referendum 101 podcast series will create a safe space for people to learn everything they need to know to get referendum-ready.
Podcast episodes are up to 10 minutes long and feature AEC spokespeople covering topics like the history of referendums, what a double majority is, mythbusting and what happens on voting day.
Seb Rennie, SCA chief commercial officer, said the series was designed to educate and inform.
“Given it’s been so long between referendums, many people have no experience with the process – and they probably have lots of questions!” he said.
“This type of podcast series is a great example of how LiSTNR’s platform and SCA’s broadcast and streaming assets can be used to spread the word about important events in an objective way.
“We’re really proud of the AEC partnership and hope it helps listeners participate in the referendum.”
Evan Ekin-Smyth, AEC spokesperson, said it was one of many ways the agency was communicating with people in the lead up to voting day.
“What’s special about this series is that it provides bite-sized, engaging content in a safe space that people can easily absorb and share with their friends and family,” he said.
“It’s critical people get the facts from a trusted source about the process of referendums ahead of casting their vote on 14 October.”
Rebecca Warton, Universal McCann client partner, said: “Developing a bespoke podcast with SCA has been the perfect partnership for this once-in-a-generation campaign.
“The podcast is a great educational and entertaining guide, and the amplification across the SCA network is an incredible way to bring this podcast to more Australians”, she said.
