School is officially back in session as Netflix has announced that Heartbreak High will return for season two.
Produced by Fremantle Australia and NewBe, season two of Heartbreak High will see the cast and creators reassemble in Sydney (Gadigal, Dharug, Dharawal and Ku-ring-gai lands), Australia for pre-production and filming.
Heartbreak High is a reimagination of an iconic piece of Australian television. Since the series premiered on 14 September 2022, it has:
• Remained in Australia top 10 TV shows on Netflix for five weeks since release
• Spent three weeks in global top 10 TV shows on Netflix (hitting #6, #5, #8 and amassing over 42.6M hours viewed in the three weeks)
• Reached top 10 TV shows in over 43 countries on Netflix including in US, Europe, Africa and Asia
• Gained traction on TikTok where #heartbreakhigh has amassed over 300m views
In season one, a discovery makes Amerie an instant pariah at Hartley High, and causes a mysterious and very public rift with her ride-or-die Harper. With her new friends – outsiders Quinni and Darren – Amerie must repair her reputation, while navigating love, sex, and heartbreak.
When the first season was released, Mediaweek’s Andrew Mercado wrote that: “If Heartbreak High (Netflix) can maintain the quality of its first two episodes, this new drama will be on track to become the best reboot of an Aussie TV classic since Wentworth (Binge) re-invented Prisoner.
“The original Heartbreak High (1994, 10 and then ABC) is still described as “gritty”, even though it was made for a G-rated timeslot. What was brave back then was its multicultural cast, with lots of Greeks and Italians, as well as Yugoslavian, Chinese, Lebanese, Salvadoran and Vietnamese characters.”
