The cameras have started rolling in the UK for series three of the HBO original TV series House Of The Dragon, which will be available for Australian audiences on Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s flagship streaming platform.
The announcement comes off the back of Max’s Australian launch, with the platform promising to bring together some of the world’s most recognised entertainment brands into one premium destination.

House rules
Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and based on House Targaryen the series is a critical prequel to Game of Thrones, unfolding 200 years before Daenerys Targaryen’s dragon-fuelled rise.
Season 3 picks up in the aftermath of King Aegon II’s coronation and the devastating loss suffered by Queen Rhaenyra.
The realm is split between the Greens, who back Aegon’s rule from the Iron Throne, and the Blacks, rallying behind Rhaenyra in exile. With both factions gathering armies, and dragons, the Targaryen civil war edges closer.
Something old and something new
Returning cast includes Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell andSonoya Mizuno among others.
Meanwhile, the new season will welcome a slew of new additions including Sons of Anarchy‘s Tommy Flanagan as Ser Roderick Dustin, Fantastic Beasts star Dan Fogler as Ser Torrhen Manderly, and the previously announced James Norton as Ormund Hightower.

Taking cues from the past
According to Variety, HBO has confirmed that House of the Dragon’s third season will follow the eight-episode format introduced in Season 2, a shift from the original ten-episode run of the debut season.
Showrunner Ryan Condal previously addressed the change during a press conference in August 2024, stating: “I haven’t had discussions with HBO about it. I would just anticipate the cadence of the show, from a dramatic storytelling perspective, will continue to be the same from Season 2 onwards.”
No date yet on just when the new season will drop.
