Box Office: Blade Runner 2049 still #1 as box office dips

The end of the school holidays and the lack of a box office blockbuster has seen the weekend gross for the top 20 movies drop to its smallest total since the first weekend of September. That September weekend did $8.52m. This most recent weekend was a little better on $9.77m, but was still a significant drop of 31% on the previous weekend and comes after three solid weekends over $14m.

#1 Blade Runner 2049 $2.61m

A second weekend at #1 although earnings were down 42%. The sci-fi marathon dropped from 498 to 477 screens with screen average down from $9,093 to $5,484. To date the new Blade Runner has earned $8.45m.

#2 The Mountain Between Us $1.71m

The romantic adventure movie starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslet opened on 288 screens and managed a slightly better screen average than Blade Runner – $5,959.

#3 Happy Death Day $1.42m

Released just in time for Friday 13th last week, the slasher horror flick went out on 262 screens and only narrowly trailed the Blade Runner screen average with $5,428.

#4 Kingsman: The Golden Circle $1.10m

The movie manages to remain in the $1m club on its fourth weekend in cinemas. Screens dropped 58 to 315 with a weekend screen average of $3,510. Total earn to-date is $17.56m.

#5 The Emoji Movie $449,000

Revenue will disappear quickly for this release which managed to do its job during the school holidays. While takings were down a massive 74%, it still managed close to half a million after five weeks in release. Its total takings so far are just over $13m.
