1.05 million Aussies hopped to the movies over the Easter weekend to catch the latest cinema releases, delivering the strongest admission result in 2022, and smashing 2021’s Easter weekend result by 32%.
The new star-studded film The Lost City starring Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt, and Channing Tatum delivered the strongest audience results of the weekend, whilst family favourite Sonic the Hedgehog 2 wasn’t far behind the top spot even during its third week on the big screen.
With the entire nation in full school holiday swing, it’s no surprise that the latest Fantastic Beasts instalment, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, sat within the top 5 best performing films of the weekend, alongside animated family title The Bad Guys.
“This result is no surprise. The incredible line-up of top-quality content over Easter shows that cinema is continuing its return-to-growth story in 2022. It only promises to get better from here as some of the best titles land on the big screen, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Top Gun: Maverick, and Jurassic World Dominion. With double the top tier of titles in 2022, we will continue to deliver the young, family, and high-value audiences that brands are looking for” said Guy Burbidge, managing director of Val Morgan Cinema.
Cinema is showing no signs of slowing down, with the next 8 weeks full of huge blockbuster titles including The Northman, Downton Abbey: A New Era, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, Lightyear, and Elvis.
