'Dream gig': Adam Liaw cooks his way across the countries of the World Cup
'Something about the atmosphere of going to a game in a league that I’d watched for years was just electric.'
In a new six-part series on SBS, Adam Liaw’s North American Fan Feasts, beloved Aussie chef Adam Liaw cooks his was through the FIFA World Cup™ host nations.
With episodes spanning Canada, Mexico and the United States, Adam reveals how fans express their passion not just through team colours, but through the flavours they share and celebrates how food, sport and culture unite communities and shape national identity.
Mediaweek asked Adam what filming the series was like for him as an avid fan of food and football.
Mediaweek: Is this a dream assignment? How big of a soccer fan are you? Who's your team?
Adam Liaw: This really is a dream gig for me.
I have never been to a World Cup before but I am a big soccer fan (and sport fan generally). I support Sydney FC in the A-League and go to most of the games.
I support Tottenham in the Premier League as well.

MW: Where was the most incredible game that you've seen?
AL: The first Premier League game I ever went to was Tottenham v Fulham in probably 2005. It wasn’t the most incredible game (I think Tottenham won 2-0 from memory) but something about the atmosphere of actually going to a game in a league that I’d watched for years was just electric.
MW: What are your favourite dishes from the series that viewers can recreate at home?
AL: The tacos de carnitas from Mexico City are a fantastic dish to make at home for a true taste of Mexico. There’s a delicious San Francisco clam chowder that would be perfect for the weather now, and some simple salmon and bacon skewers with a gochujang and Canadian maple syrup glaze that the whole crew loved.
MW: What would you serve at a World Cup Party?
AL: I think something either inspired by a host nation, or one of the teams playing. My Mexico City tres leches cake recipe would be a perfect World Cup party dish.
