This weekend, the Australian box office made $17.5 million, down 6% on last week’s box office of $18.5 million.
In its second week on screens across the country, Top Gun: Maverick continued to maintain its #1 position, grossing $12.9 million. Variety has revealed Paramount Pictures has allegedly been sued for copyright infringement by the family of the author whose article inspired the 1986 movie Top Gun. According to a complaint filed in Los Angeles federal court, the Paramount Global unit failed to reacquire the rights to Ehud Yonay’s 1983 article Top Guns from the family before releasing the sequel.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has maintained its position at #2, grossing over $1 million this past week, while Southern Star’s Vikram placed third in its first week on screens.
The Bad Guys has moved from seventh to fourth, while The Bob’s Burger Movie fell from third to fifth. Falling out of the top five this week is absurdist comedy-drama film, Everything Everywhere All at Once, which has grossed over $5 million to date.
#1, Top Gun: Maverick, $12.98 million
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick averaged $15,518 across 837 screens this weekend. The action film has grossed over $32 million as Paramount Pictures faces a lawsuit from the family of Top Guns author Ehud Yonay, who died in 2012. The film stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly.
#2, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, $1.07 million
The sequel to Doctor Strange averaged $3,328 across 323 screens this weekend, making a total of $36.5 million to date. Directed by Sam Raimi, the film stars Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Benedict Wong alongside Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.
#3, Vikram, $632,282
In its debut week, this Indian Tamil-language action thriller film written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj averaged $7,268 across 87 screens.
#4, The Bad Guys, $249,246
Animated crime comedy, The Bad Guys averaged $1,319 over 189 screens this weekend, making a total of $15.5 million to date. The film rose from seventh place to fourth.
#5, The Bob’s Burgers Movie, $228,201
In its second week, The Bob’s Burger Movie averaged $916 across 249 screens. The animated musical comedy is based on the animated TV series Bob’s Burgers and stars the original voice cast including H. Jon Benjamin as Bob Belcher and Kristen Schaal as Louise Belcher and has brought in a total of $738,992.
