Box Office: Mortal Kombat fights its way to #1

The Australian Box Office has grossed $8.49 million this week, averaging $2,047 over 4,146 screens. Overall this is down 28%, with last week bringing in $11.3 million.
Filmed entirely in South Australia and debuting in the number one position this week is Mortal Kombat, flying out of the gates earning $3.62 million. This makes it the second biggest R rated opening of all time in Australia, beaten to the title only by 2014’s The Wolf of Wall Street ($5.13m). It betas the openings of Eyes Wide Shut ($2.55m), The Hateful Eight ($2.42m) and Kill Bill Vol.1 ($2.26m).
Also debuting in the top five this week is Andy Goddard’s Six Minutes to Midnight coming in at fifth.
Dropping out this week are Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon - which was fourth last week after previously dipping out of the top five - and The Unholy which debuted last week in fifth.
#1 Mortal Kombat, $3.62 million
Inspired by the blockbuster video game franchise, Mortal Kombat opened to an average of $8,922 across 406 screens.
#2 Godzilla Vs Kong, $821,945
Still going strong, the monster flick has made a total of $26.1 million to date. This week it averaged $2,634 across 312 screens.

#3 Peter Rabbit 2, $708,029
Last week’s number one, Peter Rabbit 2 has dropped two places this week. It made $1,710 across 414 screens.
#4 Tom and Jerry, $472,271
Continuing with the fun family films Tom and Jerry proves that their age-old rivalry is still a crowd pleaser. This week the pair made $1,640 across 288 screens.
#5 Six Minutes to Midnight, $432,874
Debuting this week, the British war drama film was directed by Andy Goddard from a screenplay by Goddard, Celyn Jones, and Eddie Izzard. It averaged $1,866 across 232 screens this week.
