This weekend, the Australian box office made $25.74 million, up 10% on last week’s $23.35 million.
Making its way to #1 in its second week on screens is Minions: The Rise of Gru starring Steve Carell. The film grossed $8.1 million this past weekend and over $17 million to date. In addition to its popularity at the box office, the latest instalment in the Despicable Me franchise has attracted a lot of attention online. A viral TikTok trend has seen hordes of teenagers heading to the cinemas to watch the film in suits and formal attire.
Falling from first to second is Elvis starring Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Olivia DeJonge, and Australian actor Dacre Montgomery. In its second week, the film totalled over $5.7 million.
Top Gun: Maverick has maintained its third-place position for another week. The film starring Tom Cruise, has made over $72 million since its release and is now the fifth highest-grossing film in Australia ever.
In its fourth week on screens, Jurassic World: Dominion has remained at fourth in the box office charts, grossing over $3 million this past week. The film is the third sequel in the Jurassic World franchise and sixth instalment in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park series.
Walt Disney’s Lightyear remained at fifth, grossing a total of $7.3 million to date. Directed by Angus MacLane, the film stars Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear, Taika Waititi, James Brolin and Keke Palmer.
#1, Minions: The Rise of Gru, $8.16 million
This American computer-animated comedy film is the sequel to the spin-off prequel Minions (2015) and the fifth entry overall in the Despicable Me franchise. The film sees the return of Steve Carell as Gru and Pierre Coffin as the Minions. The film averaged $16,401 across 498 screens and has made a total of over $17.59 million.
#2, Elvis, $5.78 million
Directed by Baz Luhrmann, this biographical musical drama based on Elvis Presley’s life averaged $10,920 across 530 screens in its second week. It stars Austin Butler as Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks as his manager Colonel Tom Parker, with Olivia DeJonge, Helen Thomson, Richard Roxburgh, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Xavier Samuel, David Wenham, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Luke Bracey in supporting roles. The film has grossed $16.2 million to date
#3, Top Gun: Maverick, $5.77 million
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick averaged $11,602 across 498 screens this weekend. The action film has grossed over $72.9 million to date.
#4, Jurassic World: Dominion, $3.03 million
Directed by Colin Trevorrow and Emily Carmichael, Jurassic World: Dominion is the final film in the Jurassic World trilogy, and the conclusion to the storyline that started in the original Jurassic Park trilogy. In its fourth week, the film averaged $7,643 across 393 screens and has grossed a total of $31.26 million to date.
#5, Lightyear, $1.56 million
This 2022 spin-off of the original Toy Story film series serves as an origin story for the character Buzz Lightyear. It tells the story of young astronaut Buzz Lightyear, who, after being marooned on a hostile planet with his commander and crew, tries to find a way back home while confronting a threat in the form of the Emperor Zurg. In its third week on screens, the film grossed $3,856 across 406 screens and has made a total of $7.38 million to date.
