It was all about the #1 movie this week. The takings for the movies ranking from #2 to #20 on the top 20 rankings earned $7.04m, less than the $8.61m take for the top film. Thanks to Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2 the weekend gross was up 14% to $15.64m.
Once you get past the #1 movie the numbers drop away quickly with just one other movie over $1m, although a film had to earn $800,000 to make the top five this week.
#1 Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2 $8.61m
Although the second instalment of the franchise took $8.61m across the traditional four-day Thursday to Sunday weekend, when you factor in its Anzac Day opening last week, its total to-date is $15.68m. Across the traditional four days the film had a screen average of $12,222 from 705 screens. That is one less screen than the 706 that Beauty And The Beast opened on. The first Guardians Of The Galaxy opened in July 2014 on 584 screens with a four-day opening weekend of $6.55m. That film ended the year the sixth biggest movie with a gross of $26.73m.
#2 The Fate Of The Furious $1.71m
In its third weekend the earnings dropped 65% as its box office total sits at just under $26m. The number of screens dropped on the weekend from 580 to 426.
#3 Beauty And The Beast $855,000
It has taken six weeks for the movie to drop out of the top two with total earnings so far on $44.48m, which would have been enough to rank #2 on the 2016 list of the biggest earners.
#4 Bahubali 2: The Conclusion $839,000
The hit Indian franchise appears twice in the top six this week. This entry is for the Hindu version which opened on just 45 screens with an impressive screen average of $18,652. Meanwhile ranking at #6 is another language version which did $571,000 on 58 screens at a screen average of $9,849.
#5 Going In Style $832,000
The second weekend saw the movie hold on close to 240 screens with a total earn of $2.71m to-date.
