This week the Australian box office made $3.86 million, up 37% from last week’s $2.83 million.
Taking the top spot again this week is The Suicide Squad, the standalone sequel (and soft reboot) to 2016’s Suicide Squad. This version was written and directed by James Gunn, of Guardians of the Galaxy fame. Original director David Ayer was set to return as director for a Suicide Squad sequel, but instead chose to develop a Gotham City Sirens film.
Joining the top five this week are Free Guy, a film about a bank teller who discovers he’s actually a background player in a video game, and The Ice Road, about an ice driver who goes on a rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the lives of trapped miners.
Dropping out of the top five this week are Black Widow and Old.
#1, The Suicide Squad, $1.26 million
The 10th film in the DC Cinematic Universe, in its second week The Suicide Squad averaged $4,811 over 261 screens. It’s made a total of $3.22 million to date.
#2, Free Guy, $1.21 million
Starring Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi, Free Guy has opened to a very successful weekend, pulling in an average of $4,959 over 243 screens and debuting to second place.
#3, Jungle Cruise, $382,433
With a significant difference between second and third place, Jungle Cruise sails along happily in its third week of release. Having made a total of $2.88 million so far, this week it averaged $1,884 across 203 screens.
#4, Space Jam: A New Legacy, $245,818
The sequel to the 1996 film has made a total of $11.42 million in its fifth week of release. This week it averaged $1,499 across 164 screens.
#5, The Ice Road, $162,920
Rounding out the top five this week is The Ice Road starring Liam Neeson, debuting to an average of $1,172 across 139 screens.
