This weekend, the Australian box office made $9.21 million, down -5% on last week’s $9.73 million.
Driving into the top spot for the second week in a row is Sony’s Bullet Train starring Brad Pitt. Despite a -42% fall from the week before, the film managed to narrowly take the #1 spot, followed closely by the debut of Universal’s Nope.
Directed by Jordan Peele, Nope follows two ranch-owning siblings who attempt to capture evidence of an unidentified flying object. In its first week at the Australian box office, the horror film brought in $1.76 million across 430 screens.
Where The Crawdads Sing maintained its #3 position for a second week, as fans of the best-selling novel continue to flock to the cinemas. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, this past weekend the film fell by -28%, grossing under the $1 million mark.
Top Gun: Maverick continues to be a force to be reckoned with, maintaining a spot in the top five for 12 consecutive weeks. Tom Cruise’s legacy sequel took out the fourth spot this week, grossing over $87 million to date.
Another new entry makes it into the top five this week. Laal Singh Chaddha, an Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama, came in fifth, bringing in $770K in its first week.
Making a solid drop this week is Thor: Love and Thunder, which fell from second to sixth after five weeks in the top five. To date, the film has grossed over $42 million. Also falling out of the top five is Austin Butler’s Elvis, which slid from fifth to seventh. The biographical musical drama has brought in $31 million to date.
#1, Bullet Train, $1.82 million
In its second week, Bullet Train, directed by David Leitch averaged $3,731 across 487 screens to bring in over $1.8 million. In addition to Pitt, the film stars Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Andrew Koji, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael Shannon, Benito A. Martínez Ocasio, and Sandra Bullock. So far, the action comedy has cashed in over $5.8 million.
#2, Nope, 1.76 million
Starring Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun, the latest film by Peele has made a strong entrance in its debut week. It averaged $4,095 across 430 screens as lovers of sci-fi horror films make their way to the big screen.
#3. Where The Crawdads Sing, $828,807
Based on the 2018 novel by Delia Owens, Where The Crawdads Sing has continued to maintain traction in its fourth week on screens. The film tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. Where The Crawdads Sing averaged $2,246 across 369 screens this weekend and has grossed a total of $8.62 million.
#4, Top Gun: Maverick, $770,974
Tom Cruise stars alongside Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, Glen Powell and Jon Hamm, in the sequel to the original 1986 film. The film averaged $2,866 across 269 screens and has grossed over $87 million, making it the third highest-grossing movie of all time in Australia.
#5, Laal Singh Chaddha, $755,284
Directed by Advait Chandan and starring Bollywood megastar Aamir Khan, the comedy-drama is based on the 1994 American film Forrest Gump. In its first week at the Australian box office, the film averaged $5,282 across 143 screens.
