This weekend, the Australian box office made $12.77 million, up 80% from last week’s $7.09 million.
Making waves at the box office this past weekend was the sequel to the 2018 film Black Panther. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever dominated the charts, bringing in $9.36 million in its debut week. The highly-anticipated Marvel sequel was without Chadwick Boseman, who played King T’Challa in the first Black Panther film and who died, aged 43, in 2020.
In its fourth week, Warner Bros’ Black Adam has slipped to second, bringing in $812k. The 11th instalment in the DC Extended Universe stars Dwayne Johnson (who also served as a producer) as the titular character alongside Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, Bodhi Sabongui, and Pierce Brosnan.
Moving down from second to third is Universal’s Mrs Harris Goes to Paris. The comedy-drama tells the story of a war-widowed cleaning lady in 1950s London who falls madly in love with a couture Dior dress. The film is based on the novel Mrs Arris Goes to Paris by Paul Gallico and stars Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville.
Maintaining its spot at #4 was the Paramount+ horror film Smile. Written and directed by Parker Finn, the film stars Sosie Bacon as a therapist who, after witnessing the bizarre suicide of a patient, goes through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences, leading her to believe what she is experiencing is supernatural.
In its second week, Madman’s One Piece Film: Red fell from third to fifth. The Japanese anime film is the fifteenth feature film of the One Piece film series, based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda.
Falling out of the box office top five this week was Sony’s The Woman King.
#1, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, $9,364,587
The superhero film is the sequel to Black Panther (2018) and the 30th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, and Winston Duke. The film sees the leaders of Wakanda fight to protect their nation in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. The film averaged $10,851 across 863 screens
#2, Black Adam, $812,330
Black Adam is a superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the powers of the Egyptian gods and imprisoned just as quickly, Black Adam is freed from his tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world. In its third week, the film averaged $2,612 across 311 screens. So far, the film has grossed $17.02 million.
#3, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, $751,269
This historical comedy-drama is the third film adaption of the 1958 novel Mrs. ‘Arris Goes to Paris. Mrs. Harris sets off to Paris to buy her very own designer gown and in the process finds a whole new outlook on life. In its third week, the film averaged $2,319 across 324 screens and has grossed $5.59 million to date.
#4, Smile, $202,693
Smile is a 2022 psychological horror film written and directed by Parker Finn (in his feature directorial debut), based on his 2020 short film Laura Hasn’t Slept. The film averaged $1,185 across 171 screens, bringing in $5.59 million to date.
#5, One Piece Film: Red, $193,642
Renowned for concealing her own identity when performing, Uta’s voice has come to be described as “otherworldly.” Now, for the first time ever, Uta will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. In its first week, the film averaged $1,249 across 155 screens.
