This weekend the Australian box office made $16.15 million, down -7% from last week’s $17.4 million.
In its fifth week, Avatar: The Way of Water continues to top the box office charts, grossing over $5 million this past weekend, a drop of -37% from the week before.
Directed by James Cameron, the film sees cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Stephen Lang reprising their roles from the original film, with Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis joining as new members.
The film reportedly cost $US350 million ($521 million) to make and has recently surpassed The Lion King (2019) to become the sixth highest-grossing film of all time in Australia.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh and Olivia Colman, has maintained its spot at second in its third week on screens. The animated film made $1.9 million across 354 screens across Australia this week.
In its first week, horror film M3GAN has debuted at third. The film centres around M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. The designer of the toy decides to pair a M3GAN prototype with her niece Cady – a decision that has unimaginable consequences. The film grossed over $1.9 million.
Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre also entered the box office charts this past weekend. Coming in at fourth, the film follows the journey of an agent who is recruited by a global intelligence alliance to track down and stop the sale of a deadly weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order, grossing $1.5 million.
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, starring Javier Bardem, Constance Wu and Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes as the titular character, dropped from third to fifth. Based on the best-selling book series, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is a live-action / CGI musical comedy that brings the character to a new, global audience.
Falling out of the top five this weekend was A Man Called Otto and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
#1 Avatar: The Way of Water – $5.17 million
The highly-anticipated sequel to Avatar saw a -37% drop from last week. In its five weeks of release, the film has grossed $75.15 million to date and averaged $7.133 across 726 screens this past weekend.
#2 Puss in Boots: The Last Wish – $1.927 million
The star-studded Pixar film averaged $5.445 across 354 screens this past weekend and has grossed $12.64 million to date.
#3 M3GAN – $1.92 million
In its first week, the horror film averaged $7,105 across 271 screens and grossed $1.92 million
#4 Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre – $1.59 million
The film averaged $5,007 across 319 screens this past weekend, grossing $2.3 million to date.
#5 Lyle, Lyle Crocodile – $1.02 million
The family-friendly film has grossed $8.34 million since its release. This past weekend, the film averaged $2,590 across 394 screens.
