This weekend the Australian box office made $14.15 million, up 3% from last week’s $13.74 million.
In its seventh week, Avatar: The Way of Water continues to reach new heights, grossing over $3.2 million this past weekend and showing no signs of slowing down.
Debuting at second this past weekend was Indian-Hindi action thriller, Pathaan. Directed by Siddharth Anand, the film brought in over $2.7 million and is the fourth instalment in the YRF Spy Universe.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh and Olivia Colman, has fallen to third in its fifth week on screens. The animated film made $1.5 million across 321 screens across Australia this past weekend.
In its debut week, What’s Love Got to Do With It? came in at fourth, grossing $884k. The film stars Lily James, Shazad Latif, Shabana Azmi, and Emma Thompson and is set between London and Lahore.
Horror film M3GAN has fallen from fourth to fifth in its third week. The film centres around M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. toy designer toy decides to anair a M3GAN prototype with her niece Cady – a decision that has unimaginable consequences.
Falling out of the top five this weekend was Babylon after only two weeks on screens. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, and Li Jun Li. Its plot chronicles the rise and fall of multiple characters during Hollywood’s transition from silent to sound films in the late 1920s.
#1 Avatar: The Way of Water – $3.24 million
The highly-anticipated sequel to Avatar saw a -20% drop from last week. In its seven weeks of release, the film has grossed $86.24 million to date and averaged $5,751 across 566 screens this past weekend.
Directed by James Cameron, the film sees cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Stephen Lang reprising their roles from the original film, with Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis joining as new members.
The film has surpassed Avengers: Endgame to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in Australia.
#2 Pathaan – $2.21 million
The action thriller film’s opening week averaged a whopping $17,033 across 130 screens. The film centres on an Indian spy who takes on the leader of a group of mercenaries who have nefarious plans to target his homeland.
The film was shot in various locations in India, Afghanistan, Spain, UAE, Turkey, Russia, Italy and France
#3 Puss in Boots: The Last Wish – $1.5 million
The star-studded Pixar film averaged $4,675 across 321 screens this past weekend and has grossed $18.52 million to date. Based on the character from Shrek 2 (2004) and inspired by the fairy tale by Giovanni Francesco Straparola, the film is the sixth instalment in the Shrek franchise.
#4 What’s Love Got to Do With It? – $884,517
In its first week, the film averaged $2,764 across 320 screens this past weekend. The film follows filmmaker Zoe (Lily James) as she films her friends’ hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents.
#5 M3GAN – $767,663
In its third week, the horror film averaged $2,884 across 266 screens and has grossed $5.42 million to date.
