This weekend, the Australian box office made $8.55 million, up 32% on last week’s $8.33 million.
Taking the crown for the second week in a row was Ticket to Paradise starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts. Despite the plot being set in Bali, the Ol Parker-directed film was filmed on location in Queensland. This past weekend, the film grossed over $2.8 million.
Warner Bros’ DC League of Super-Pets followed closely behind grossing over $2.6 million in its second week. Starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, the film tells the story of Superman’s pet dog Krypto and shelter dog Ace who work with other animals to save the captured superheroes from Lex Luthor and Lulu.
This past weekend, there were three new entrants in the top five. Coming in third, nearly 13 years after the original blockbuster became the king of the box office world, Avatar returned to cinemas, remastered with 4K High Dynamic Range and 9.1 sound. The re-release comes ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel and the first of four follow-ups stretching to the end of the decade.
Also new to cinemas this past weekend was Roadshow’s Fall – a survival thriller film directed and co-written by Scott Mann. The nailbiting film follows two women who climb a 2,000-foot tall radio tower and get stranded at the top with no way down.
In its first week, Paramount’s Paws Of Fury: The Legend Of Hank starring Michael Cera, Samuel L. Jackson and Ricky Gervais made the top five, bringing in over $550k. The film has received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising the voice acting and animation, while others criticised the plot and characters.
