Chris Pratt’s Guardians of the Galaxy continues its success
This weekend, the Australian box office made $11,444,002, down 18% from last week’s $13,855,430.
Once again, Walt Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 saw audiences arrive in droves to see the Marvel blockbuster film starring Chris Pratt. With no signs of slowing down, the film recorded over $6.5 million, bringing in almost 60% of the revenue at the Australian box office. The emotional third instalment follows Peter Quill (Pratt), who once again rallies his team to defend the universe and with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s no wonder it’s getting rave reviews!
Universal’s Book Club 2: The Next Chapter delighted fans of the rom-com, bumping The Super Mario Bros Movie from the number two spot. The Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen led film raked in over $1.1 million for it’s first week of release.
In its sixth week of release and coming in at number three, was Universal’s Mario movie. While it is still proving popular, it was the first week that the Mario and Luigi origin story dipped under the $1 million mark, bringing in just over $839,000.
Debuting in the fourth spot over the weekend was Sony’s Love Again. The film, which starred and featured a soundtrack by Celine Dion, brought in just over $487,000 with fans heading to the cinema to see the plot. And by plot, we mean Outlander’s Sam Heughan.
In its eighth week and coming in at number five was John Wick: Chapter 4. The fourth instalment brought in just over $270,000 nationally.
Falling out of the top five this weekend was Roadshow’s Hypnotic (debut), Forum Distribution’s The Kerala Story (debut) and Warner Bros. Air.
#1 Guardians of the Galaxy 3 – $6,522,024
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 grossed $6,522,024, averaging $7,471 over 873 screens, -31% from its debut weekend. The film stars Chukwudi Iwuji, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Pom Klementieff, alongside Pratt.
#2 Book Club 2: The Next Chapter – $1,142,815
Book Club 2: The Next Chapter is the second instalment to the Book Club franchise and follows the new journey of the four best friends (Keaton, Steenburgen, Bergen and Fonda) as they take their book club to Italy for a fun girls trip they never had. The film grossed $1,142,815, averaging $3,237 over 353 screens.
#3 The Super Mario Bros Movie – $839,638
The Super Mario Bros Movie grossed $839,638, averaging $2,313 over 363 screens, down 39% from last week.
#4 Love Again – $487,792
In this ultimate romantic comedy, a young woman (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) tries to ease the pain of her fiancé’s death by sending romantic texts to his old mobile phone number, and forms a connection with the man (Heughan) the number has been reassigned to. The movie earned $487, 792, with an average of 1,688 over 289 screens.
#5 John Wick: Chapter 4 – $270,496
The Chad Stahelski directed film brought in $270,496 nationally over the weekend and averaged $1,402 across 193 screens, down 38% from last week.
