Seventh week at #1 for The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber

Singles

Australia’s The Kid Laroi and Canada’s Justin Bieber make it seven weeks at #1 in the ARIA singles chart with their collaboration Stay. Other singles by Australian artists to spend seven weeks at #1 have been John Farnham’s You’re The Voice in November 198), Pseudo Echo’s Funky Town in December 1986, and Kylie Minogue’s Locomotion in August 1987. The current record holder for weeks at #1 (by an Australian artist or otherwise) is Tones And I’s Dance Monkey which first hit #1 in August 2019, and spent 24 weeks in the top spot.

Ed Sheeran takes out his 22nd top ten single on the ARIA Charts as he debuts at #3 with Visiting Hours. The track was released when the British singer-songwriter announced his fifth studio album, = (pronounced “equals”), which is due to be dropped on 29 October. Visiting Hours was premiered at the state funeral for Michael Gudinski in March and is a tribute to the late Mushroom Records founder. The track includes backing vocals by Kylie Minogue and Jimmy Barnes. It’s Sheeran’s second top ten single on the chart this week, with Bad Habits sitting at #2.

A week after debuting at #7, Elton John and Dua Lipa’s Cold Heart (Pnau Remix) jumps up three spots to hit #4. It becomes Dua Lipa’s sixth top tive single in Australia. The single sits one spot below the peak reached by Elton John’s duet with George Michael, Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me which hit #3 in January 1992.

Perth artist Clinton Kane makes his ARIA top 50 debut with I Guess I’m In Love. It’s been a big couple of years for Kane, including relocating to Los Angeles, releasing the EP this is what it feels like and collaborating with Dutch DJ Martin Garrix on the single Drown, which peaked at # 12 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart in March 2020. Kane released the single Chicken Tendies in February, going on to peak at #88 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

As well as hitting #1 on the albums chart with Solar Power, Lorde hits the singles chart top 50 at #29 with Mood Ring. The album’s third single includes backing vocals by Phoebe Bridgers, Marlon Williams and Clairo, among others. Solar Power’s title track has returned to the top 50 this week at #39.

As well as taking out the top spot, Justin Bieber has also come in at #43 featuring alongside Don Toliver on Skrillex’s new song, Don’t Go.

Albums

New Zealand superstar Lorde claims her third #1 album on the ARIA Charts as she returns with Solar Power. The singer-songwriter’s third album comes four years on from Melodrama which hit #1 in June 2017 and includes contributions from Robyn, Jack Antonoff, Marlon Williams, Phoebe Bridgers and more. Lorde first hit #1 with her debut album Pure Heroine in October 2013. She’s scheduled to tour Australia in support of the album in March 2022.

The highest ranking Australian album this week comes from Holy Holy, who claim a second ARIA top ten album with Hello My Beautiful World at #4. The Sydney duo’s fourth album comes two years on from the ARIA Award-nominated My Own Pool Of Light which hit #14 in August 2019. It takes over from Paint (which hit #7 in March 2017) as their highest ever chart peak.

Melbourne band Tropical F**k Storm takes out a new ARIA albums chart peak as they debut at #7 with Deep States. The third studio album from the supergroup made up of members from The Drones, High Tension, MOD CON, Harmony, and Palm Springs is the follow-up to Braindrops

Releasing fourth album, Trip At Knight, American rapper Trippie Redd makes his first appearance in the ARIA albums chart top ten at #9. It’s the follow-up to 2020’s Pegasus and becomes his first entry in the top 50 since the mixtape A Love Letter To You 4 hit #47 in December 2019. Trip At Knight takes over from Life’s A Trip (which hit #14 in August 2018) as Redd’s highest peak. The album includes collaborations with Drake, Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti and more.

Late ARIA Hall Of Fame member Slim Dusty returns to the chart with Gone Fishin’ at #11. The compilation brings together twelve of the iconic country artist’s tracks about fishing. Previously, Slim Dusty charted with a compilation showcasing his trucking songs, Prime Movers which hit #43 in July 2016. He last charted with the soundtrack Slim & I at #8 in September 2020.

Sydney sibling duo Angus and Julia Stone return with their first album in four years, Life Is Strange charting at #16. Their first album together since 2017’s Snow is the soundtrack to the video game Life Is Strange: True Colors. Between duo albums, Angus Stone released the Dope Lemon album Smooth Big Cat and Julia Stone released the solo album Sixty Summers.
