Stan Sport and the Nine Network have announced it will broadcast one of Australia’s biggest global sporting events in 2022, the UCI Road World Championships, to be held between September 18 – 25 in Wollongong. Wollongong 2022 will be only the second time Australia has hosted the UCI Road World Championships in its 101-year history.
Wollongong 2022 will comprise eleven UCI World Championship road cycling events contested in front of 300,000 spectators and will include individual time trials and road races as well as a team time trial mixed relay for over 1000 of the world’s best male and female riders. Stan Sport will be the only place to watch every minute of every race across eight days of competition, with daily highlights and re-caps available to stream on demand.
The Championships will begin on Sunday 18 September, with a double header – the Men’s Elite and Women’s Elite Time Trials. It is the first time in the history of the UCI Road World Championships that men and women will compete on the same day and over the same distance. A city-based circuit will be used for all Time Trials, bringing all the action to the heart of Wollongong.
To complete the week of racing, the Men Elite and Women Elite Road Races will unfold on the weekend of September 24 & 25 showcasing the topography of the region from the coast to the escarpment.
All eyes will be on Aussie star and 5 x Tour de France stage winner Caleb Ewan who has declared his intentions to win a World Championship medal in Wollongong, while Amanda Spratt is likely to be leading the Australian representation in the Women Elite category. The cycling world will be waiting to see if French rider Julian Alaphilippe will come to contest for a third consecutive title in the Men Elite Road Race.
UCI President David Lappartient declared: “We are delighted that the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong will be broadcast by the well-known Australian streaming, live and on-demand platform Stan Sport. With 11 UCI World titles to be won, it is going to be a fantastic show that will thrill spectators along the race route and fans who tune into the action from a distance.
