The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony is set to be broadcast live and free exclusively on Seven and 7plus, on Tuesday, August 9 from 5:00am.
The ceremony in Birmingham marks the end of 11 days of sporting action in which 4,500 Commonwealth athletes competed across 19 sports and eight para-sports.
Hosts Annie Williams, Matt Shirvington and Emma Freedman will take audiences live to Birmingham for all the colour and excitement of the Closing Ceremony of the XXII Commonwealth Games.
To mark 11 days of competition coming to a close, the David Dixon Award will be presented to the most outstanding athlete of the Games.
Home-grown talent Baker Boy will take centre stage and perform in the Closing Ceremony at the Games. He will be joined on stage by Vanessa Amorosi, one of Australia’s most dynamic singers, and Geelong’s own singer-songwriter Taylor Henderson.
Jorja Smith, Laura Mvula and UB40 will also be among the acts performing at the closing ceremony, which will also include a nod to the hit TV show Peaky Blinders.
In a first for the Commonwealth Games Federation, four elders from the traditional owners Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung, Wadawurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung and Gunaikurnai will be part of the official handover at the closing ceremony where Birmingham will officially pass the baton to Victoria 2026.
Minister for Treaty and First Peoples Gabrielle Williams said, “First Peoples traditional and contemporary culture will be at the heart of our performance in the Handover Ceremony, just as they will be at the centre of the Commonwealth Games in Victoria 2026.”
The Elders from the lands on which Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat, Bendigo and Gippsland will each present a carved message stick to Commonwealth Games Federation President, Dame Louise Martin.
The opening ceremony saw Kookaburras co-captain Eddie Ockenden and decorated six-time squash representative Rachael Grinham be Australia’s 2022 Birmingham flagbearers.
