The absolute stand-out title added to any of the streaming services this week is the Netflix original series Master of None. The series was co-created by and stars US comedian Aziz Ansari of Parks and Recreation fame. A ten-episode half-hour comedy, each episode of the series functions as a mini-movie essay with Aziz’s character ‘Dev’ learning his way through life.
Master of None is best viewed as 70’s-era Woody Allen meets Louie, but filtered through Aziz Ansari’s life experiences. Completely lacking in cynicism, the show explores aspects of life that are important to Aziz, such as the stereotypical casting of Indian people in movies, his own ignorance of his parents immigration to America, the differences between how men and women are treated in society, and more. It also happens to be very funny.
Movie highlights are The Godfather movies on Presto, along with a little-seen, but great action film Eastern Promises, which boasts a memorably violent steam room fight scene that viewers will never forget.
