Star Wars: The Force Awakens breaks three Australian box office records

The Walt Disney Studios Australia announced today that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has achieved three new all-time box office records.
The film opened on the highest number of screens ever, set a new record for biggest opening day ever and the biggest opening weekend ever.

Three new Australian box office records
1. Launching on December 17th, 2015 Star Wars:The Force Awakens opened on a record 941 screens.
The most screens a movie opened on previously this year was 760 for the launch of another movie from Walt Disney – The Avengers: Age Of Ultron.
Just last month, the new James Bond movie Spectre opened on 618 screens.

2. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has had the biggest-ever opening day box office in Australia, taking $9.4m last Thursday with screenings that started at midnight. At Village Cinemas alone, customers were offered 733 separate screenings in the first 24 hours.

3. The third of the records set by the seventh instalment of the Star Wars franchise was a bumper box office haul of $27.2m in its first weekend.
This well and truly blows away the previous record of $18.36m set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 back in July 2011.
The biggest opening weekends of this year before this weekend were:
$16.07m Jurassic World
$15.70m The Avengers: Age Of Ultron
