How the Law Society of NSW is breaking down the law for listeners
The Law Society of NSW and LiSTNR has launched a new podcast, Lawfully Explained, that helps break down some of the most common legal issues for the public.
The series will feature a range of legal experts talking about everyday legal issues in an easy to understand format.
Podcst Week’s Trent Thomas caught up with Amy Dale, the content and communications manager for the Law Society of NSW to talk about the new 16 part series.
Dale said the podcast was part of a larger Lawfully Explained campaign aimed at raising the profile of the legal profession and connecting the public with its members.
“The main thinking behind the campaign is that people very often need the advice of a lawyer, they just don’t know where to start. And people often need help in understanding what the law is. They need help understanding their rights. If they do have to go to court, it can be a daunting experience. It’s helpful to know, what does the courtroom look like. The intention of Lawfully Explained is in the title of the show, to explain the law, but it is also to demystify the law for people.”
Dale said the podcast is aimed towards non-legal professionals, and as one herself she uses her own perspective when talking to experts.
“I’m not a lawyer. So pretty much all the questions I ask are things that people like me would ask. We get lawyers to help answer them in a way that people can understand. Often there can be a belief that lawyers speak another language or that they can talk in jargon, but this is a way of saying no, no, this is how things operate in a courtroom, this is some information on what your rights are on certain issues. Do you have a dispute with your neighbour? Do you need help during a will? Here’s the information that you need to know.”
Dale said that podcasting was a good addition to the Lawfully Explained podcast due to its ability to reach a large number of people.
“Having it in the medium of podcasting is just such a powerful way to reach more people as possible. Podcasting seems to be getting more and more popular. It’s a great way for people to get information and also want to have fun conversations. Sometimes people think of the law as this very scary place. We also want to demystify that idea. Having these conversations in a fun way makes it accessible to so many people and hopefully explains it to them.”
The podcast points listeners to the website, lawfullyexplained.com.au, and a useful tool where people can search for a lawyer in their area.

LiSTNR launches audio fiction pillar headlined by Zöe Foster-Blake
LiSTNR has announced that it will launch an original podcast audio fiction pillar with the book The Younger Man by Zöe Foster-Blake as the first title to be developed.
Developed in partnership with LiSTNR and renowned film and TV executive Bob Campbell and Bryden Media, Foster-Blake’s best-selling book will become the first of four of LiSTNR’s audio fiction episodic series. The book follows the aftermath of Abby’s memorable night with a younger, 23-year-old man, and whether the relationship will ever work.
In addition to creating episodic releases, LiSTNR will also debut feature-length audio movies, the first of which will be Loraine Peck’s The Second Son, winner of the 2021 Ned Kelly Award for Best Debut Crime Fiction. LiSTNR will also expand its crime genre driving a new category – real crime, developing stories using factual, investigative, documentary-style journalism and storytelling.
LiSTNR is investing in audio fiction with book adaptations by Australian authors to bring audiences compelling audio stories, with Bryden Media casting Australian actors to deliver the stories in different podcast formats as episodic series or audio movies.
