Bringing neuroscience to the masses on Do You F*cking Mind?
Do You F*cking Mind? is the latest title to officially join the LiSTNR podcast suite. Hosted by Alexis Fernandez, the podcast is a mixture of neuroscience, psychology, and making mental health information accessible.
Author of Be Bold and The Neuroscience of Self-Love, Fernandez launched the podcast whilst completing her Masters degree in neuroscience. From the beginning the podcast has been focused on helping listeners improve their relationships with themselves, or as Fernandez says: “delivering mindset hacks for a badass life.”
Podcats Week’s Tess Connery caught up with Fernandez to chat about the podcast and what she hopes it brings people.
“I was coming out of a contract and I was looking to partner with a company so that it felt like more of a partnership,” Fernandez said of her decision to bring the podcast to LiSTNR.
“I wanted something really collaborative, not just with recording the podcast, but also with a producer I could bounce ideas off and help with socials and content. With everyone I spoke to, LiSTNR was definitely the best fit.”
There are several podcasts on the health and wellness space, with many of them being very serious and straightforward. When asked what made her take a more casual approach in her podcast, Fernandez said that the aim was th make the content as “accessible and relatable” as possible.
“As I got older, I started getting really, really into science – but there was a lot of noise that I had to cut through to get to the fun parts of science. I thought that a lot of people would find scientific facts, and neuroscience, and facts about their own brain really interesting if they didn’t have to do all the boring stuff first to get to it.
“I thought if I could create something that’s really relatable, that packages it up in a way that’s fun, if I could make it casual – and maybe have some swear words here and there – it would be a way of getting people to be passionate about science.”
As well as tips on how to improve your life, the podcast deals with topics such as How do you die of water poisoning? What does cocaine do to your brain? And can you survive with half a brain?
“Sometimes I get requests from the listeners,” said Fernandez. “Other times when I’m actually researching and putting together the science fact for the episode, I’m coming across other things that I could be talking about. I’ve got this whole back catalogue of ideas that are jotted down that I’ve come across while planning one brain fact for an episode.
“It’s never-ending, because once you start going down that rabbit hole, there’s so much information that you could talk about and there are so many interesting facts.”
Ultimately, Fernandez said that she hopes listeners of Do You F*cking Mind? “Improve their relationship with themselves and with their brains” after listening to the podcast.
“Once we realise how heavily linked neuroscience and psychology are, then we realise that physical actions that you do for your brain health will have a direct impact on your mental health – and vice versa.
“When I talk about improving your relationship with yourself, it’s a holistic approach. When you do that, it will improve every other aspect of your life – it will improve your external relationships, how you do in your career, your productivity, and obviously your mental health and your overall happiness.”

Should You Really Eat That? SBS has the answer
SBS Audio is de-mystifying the world of food and nutrition with the insight of chefs, restaurateurs, and dieticians – at a time when eating the ‘right thing’ seems challenging.
Should you actually put olive oil or salt in your coffee, as recent food trends suggest? And which seafoods are actually sustainable? The subject is so confusing that award-winning chef at Attica restaurant, Ben Shewry, took finned fish off the menu for two years, being unsure what to ethically serve.
SBS Audio’s newest podcast Should You Really Eat That? explores the cultural, social, and nutritional confusion over the staples in our diet, like rice, bread, tea, coffee, cheese, and seafood.
Host and food writer Lee Tran Lam uncovers why some foods get a bad rap in Australia yet are enthusiastically consumed in other parts of the world.
“The idea for the podcast started when I read a dietician’s advice that they’d never put white rice in their shopping trolley, yet the grain feeds millions around the world and so many national dishes are built around white rice,” Lam said.
“Similarly, humans have also been eating bread for thousands of years, but there’s now so much anti-bread sentiment. So, in the podcast we try to make sense of that: what’s happening to shift our perceptions and palates?”
