Although share and cume were both down, 3AW is in no trouble of losing its leadership status. Powered by another remarkable breakfast share for Ross and Russ – 22.8% – the station has dominated another year of Melbourne airwaves. The breakfast share has been remarkable since Covid cut a swathe through 2020 disrupting the survey releases. Indeed since GfK restarted after the 2020 shutdowns, 3AW breakfast had posted 10 consecutive surveys above 20% with a high of 28.4% late last year.
Gold 104.3 10.1% (10.9%)

To say that Christian O’Connell has been wildly successful in Melbourne since his arrival at Gold would be to understate his performance. Even the station PR team seem restrained when looking at the size of the achievement:
#1FM station for the sixteenth consecutive survey for GOLD104.3 with more listeners than any other Melbourne station, #1FM breakfast for GOLD104.3’s The Christian O’Connell Show, his thirteenth consecutive survey as #1FM
Also sharing the spotlight of course are the rest of the breakfast team, Jack and Patsy, plus Gold announcers across the day including Huggy, Gavin Miller, Toni Tenaglia and Higgo. Highpoints of the year for the station were two surveys above 11% while breakfast pushed above 9% in Survey 6, something that Christian O’Connell has done five times since his arrival.

Massive cume rise this survey as the station builds back to 1m. All dayparts headed north, led by a breakfast bump of 1.2 to 6.3%. Share in afternoon and evening are both now over 8%. smoothfm doesn’t lead in any daypart, but is #2 55-65. Station share is back close to its best this year.

After two drops of cume in recent surveys, the road back to 1m is looking good. The shares this survey were flat though with only Smallsy being able to avoid a drop in evenings. Breakfast was down to 6.1% which is the smallest number this year. Despite a drop in drive to 7.0%, Kate, Tim and Joel remain the #2 FM choice after Gold’s all-music offering.

Listeners to Fox breakfast know that Fifi Box often has a lot on her mind. Her summer break now should be a little better though with news that the ratings have turned around after the toughest year at the station since she joined. Breakfast share was up 1.9 this survey, pushing Fifi, Fev and Nick to 6.6%. That’s still not a great result in terms of Fox breakfast history, but it’s a big improvement on a sub-5% result in Survey 7. Share was up right across the day this survey with a high of 8.1% in drive for Carrie and Tommy. The station started the year with three station and breakfast shares over 7% before things turned nasty.
KIIS 101.1 FM 5.6% (4.6%)
Cume 912,000 (+42,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 6.4% (4.4%)
Best Breakfast 7.1% (4.4%)
A good result for the team as Jase and Lauren set about creating a legacy at the station. A big cume and share bump at KIIS and a modest lift in breakfast share (+0.3 to 5.0%) are good signs for 2022. Share was up right across the day with Will and Woody performing best, up 1.6 to 6.8%. KIIS had a tough year with three station and breakfast shares under 5.0%.

Cume 493,000 (-14,000)
2020 results: Best/worst
Best 10+ 6.2% (5.0%)
Best breakfast 6.8% (5.2%)
And we thought KIIS had a tough year! Scariest ratings year here since the FM brand launched perhaps. Station high was 5.3% while breakfast drifted lower from two surveys over 6% to under 4% in Survey 7. Cume not in a good place either. Lots of work to do next year.

Garry and Tim delivered some great content in the back half of the year, yet the numbers show the final survey was the lowest of the year (2.3%) and the station’s second smallest breakfast share in five years.
