Mediaweek’s Top 25 Media People 2017: Sports journalist Caroline Wilson

Media executives who made a difference in 2017

Our annual listing of 25 media executives who made a difference this year and are shaping how 2018 will look.

Caroline Wilson, Columnist, presenter, podcaster

Caroline Wilson‘s decision to step down as The Age’s chief football writer had the media industry in shock. She has held that position for nearly two decades, in which she has earned the reputation of being “The First Lady of Football”. Her stories in the paper and online are a reliable source of breaking news.

Her opinions on the game and the business behind it are often met with criticism and support. Love her or hate her, Wilson has established herself as a force to be reckoned with. She is the pioneer for women covering AFL. Apart from her duties at Fairfax Media, Wilson contributes to 3AW’s pre-game program every Saturday and appears on Sportsday on Tuesday nights. Along with this, she is also a contributor on ABC’s Offsiders and is a regular panellist on Nine’s Monday night show Footy Classified.

While Wilson has stepped away from her role at The Age, she will not be stepping away from the media spotlight. Wilson also hosts a podcast series called Don’t Shoot The Messenger with Corrie Perkin.
