As Sammy J takes a break, ABC Melbourne Breakfast is being helmed by Matt Tilley.
Having previously hosted shows on FoxFM, Triple M, KIIS 101.1, and Nova Tilley is no stranger to the mic or the early mornings.
Waking up on Tuesday, Tilley opened the show by mentioning that today is predicted to be the day that the Bureau of Meteorology finally declares an El Nino – but that’s not the only reason that Tuesday is significant.
“It’s also an auspicious day for me – my youngest son turns 18 today,” Tilley said. “It’s much cheaper to say happy birthday on the radio than it is to actually buy a card, so happy birthday mate, I know you won’t be up for quite a few hours.”
Telling listeners about how he and his wife had bought their son a phone for the occasion, Tilley continued saying “I was very chuffed with the fact that I had managed to put it on our plan so I didn’t have to pay for the whole thing upfront, and while the woman in the store was out the back doing some paperwork I propped it up and took a photo to send to my wife.
“I said ‘I’ve sorted all this, and because it’s our idiot son with the shortest attention span, I also bought him a holder for his card’ – about 30 seconds later, I get a text back from my son saying ‘I don’t think this was meant for me!’
“He then knew that several days before his 18th birthday his present had been sorted, and that he’s a bit of an idiot when it comes to concentrating on more than one thing at once. Which of course I’ve shared with him over the years, that’s that wasn’t a surprise to him,” Tilley joked.
As well as radio work, Matt Tilley has TV credits including The Fugitive, The Great Chase, The Chat Room and The Greatest.
He is currently the chief communications officer of Foodbank Victoria, having worked for the organisation for the past three years.
