Australian Traveller Media is one of the success stories amongst the indie magazine publishers in Australia. This week the company has announced new appointments to the Australian Traveller team, with Carla Grossetti coming on board as a full-time writer and chief sub-editor and Emily Murphy joining the digital team as producer and writer.
Australian Traveller Media managing director Quentin Long said the expansion of the editorial team represents an exciting development for the title. “This is great news for Australian Traveller and International Traveller. It enables us to deliver even more industry-leading content to our readers and fulfil our mission to connect Australians with their next amazing experience better than ever.”
Long added recruiting new members to the editorial team well and truly jettisons Covid to the rear-view vision mirror. “We’re now back to pre-Covid staffing levels and investment in content is critical to our future success. These appointments are going to drive our content leadership even further, cementing our position as the leading travel media company in Australia.”
Carla Grossetti has been writing about travel since she was first employed by News Corp Australia as a cadet reporter at the age of 18, and brings more than 25 years of experience to the role of senior writer and chief sub-editor. During the past two decades, she has swapped back and forth, between digital and print, writing and editing. She has also been engaged as a sub-editor and writer at The Guardian Travel, The Sunday Times’ Travel, Conde Nast Traveller and delicious. magazine and has been published in Escape, Travel + Luxury and SMH’s Traveller.
The publisher has reported that Emily Murphy’s experience at Prime Creative Media coupled with her double degree in communications and media studies and international studies sees her well placed to join the Australian Traveller Media digital team as a writer and producer as it continues to build its subscriber base.
Australian Traveller on the newsstand
Earlier this week newsagent Mark Fletcher talked to Mediaweek about the way newsagents are coping with the decline in magazine sales.
Today, Australian Traveller Media’s Long told Mediaweek: “Distribution continues to be the biggest challenge in the print game, but there are always opportunities. The reprint of the 100 Ways to Holiday Here this Year in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic shows that you can have some great success when the product, marketing and proposition are right.”
While noting the importance of newsagents in the magazine business model, Long noted it is one of a number of revenue streams.
“We will launch our new direct subscription strategy in early June. We continue to see this multi-channel solution with digital the first customer touchpoint as the right strategy.”
Long has yet to fully evaluate the attractiveness of joining the Readly digital magazine platform, telling Mediaweek it was not a high priority.
